Special Education
At Chemawa Indian School, we are committed to ensuring that every student receives the support they need to succeed. Our Special Education program provides individualized services and resources they require in compliance with the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act.
Child Find: Identifying and Supporting Students with Disabilities
Under IDEA, schools are required to identify, locate and evaluate all students who may need special education services. This process, known as Child Find, ensures no student is overlooked. Families, teachers, medical professionals, or our Special Education (SPED) staff can make referrals for special education.
Evaluation and Eligibility
When a referral is made, the school will request written consent from the parent or guardian to conduct an evaluation. Our team of specialists will:
- Observe the student in various settings.
- Conduct diagnostic assessments.
- Gather input from families, teachers and other sources.
This comprehensive evaluation determines whether the student meets eligibility criteria established by federal law and the Oregon Department of Education.
Individualized Education Program
If a student is eligible for special education services, our team will develop an Individualized Education Program tailored to their unique needs. The IEP outlines:
- The student’s strengths, challenges and educational goals.
- Specially designed instruction and related services.
- Necessary accommodations and modifications.
The IEP is created collaboratively by a team that includes the student (when appropriate), parents or guardians, teachers and other professionals. The plan is reviewed and updated annually to ensure the student continues to receive effective support.
