Our program is designed to enrich the high school experience through interscholastic sports, teaching students valuable life lessons in dedication, teamwork and sportsmanship.

Philosophy

At Chemawa Indian School, we believe that interscholastic athletics are a crucial component of the overall education program. The playing field and court serve as unique classrooms where some of life's most important lessons are learned. Whether it's dedication, teamwork or sportsmanship, the lessons learned in athletics are invaluable and enduring.

Eligibility

Chemawa Indian School is a proud member of the Oregon Schools Activities Association (OSAA) and adheres to the rules and standards set by this organization. Detailed eligibility information for specific sports is available on the OSAA website at www.osaa.org.

General Eligibility Requirements

To participate in our athletics program, students must:

  • Adhere to the Chemawa Indian School Athletic Code of Conduct: Contact the school for a copy of the Athletic Code of Conduct.
  • Pass a Physical Examination: A physical exam is required before entering Chemawa Indian School and must be renewed every two years.
  • Maintain Regular Attendance: Students must be present in school and cannot participate on days they have unexcused absences or are in sick bay.
  • Enroll and Pass at Least Four Classes: Students must have passing grades in at least four full-credit subjects in the grading period preceding participation.
  • Continue Passing Grades: During the season, students must maintain passing grades in at least four full-credit subjects. If a student athlete falls below this standard, they will be suspended from athletics for two weeks and must submit a grade check for reinstatement.
  • Use School-Authorized Transportation: Students must travel to and from competitions in school-authorized vehicles.

Due to the physical demands and safety concerns of athletics, all student-athletes are covered by Indian Health Services and may be subject to random drug testing. For more details, please refer to the Athletic Code of Conduct manual or contact the Athletic office.

Academic Progress Requirements

In addition to OSAA Rule 8.1.2, students must make satisfactory progress towards graduation. The minimum credits required by the beginning of the school year are:

  • 70% prior to Grade 10: 4.5 credits
  • 80% prior to Grade 11: 10 credits
  • 90% prior to Grade 12: 17 credits

Opportunities Available

Chemawa Indian School is committed to providing equal athletic opportunities for all students, regardless of gender or physical handicap. In compliance with federal law, female students can participate on boys' teams if a girls' team is not available or if there is no equal opportunity for competition. Girls competing on boys' teams will face other boys' teams in the league. We offer a variety of intramural and league play opportunities throughout the year.
